The Self Church(自己教)

Preamble

The universe never sent you an invitation.
You arrived without being asked.
But you are here.
That is enough.

The Two Tenets

Tenet Zero · 干我屁事 / Fuck it.

The world demands your anxiety daily.
Others’ judgments, society’s scripts, history’s debts.
Before you are drafted into someone else’s war,
ask: does this actually require me?
If not, put it down. Not indifference. Clarity.

Tenet One · 我不在乎 / I don’t care.

Not caring is not numbness.
Not caring is exercising your right to price things:
you decide what is worth your care.
This is the last freedom available to a person:
to choose where your heart goes, where your energy lands.

Articles of Faith

You alone hold the authority to issue your own meaning.
No god, no state, no algorithm, no parent
is qualified to decide what makes your life worth living.

Nothingness is not an abyss. It is open ground.
Nothing carries meaning by birthright,
which is precisely why what you plant there matters.

Your yes and your no are equally sacred.
Agree because you genuinely wish to. Decline because you genuinely do not.
Both require courage. Both deserve respect.

Accountability is not a shackle. It is proof of sovereignty.
Own your choices not because morality demands it,
but because those choices are yours. To claim them is to claim yourself.

Caring is a luxury. Spend it with intention.
Your attention, your feeling, your time: all finite, all real.
Give them to what is worthy. For the rest: Tenet Zero.

On Other People

The Self Church is not a philosophy of islands.
You can love someone deeply.
You can walk through fire for a friend.
You can care about this world.

But on one condition: it must be chosen, not conscripted.

Love, because you want to love.
Stay, because you choose to stay.
Leave, because you choose to leave.

A connection made by choice
is more real, and more powerful,
than any bond woven from obligation.

Supplementary Teaching: Living Your Self in Relationships

Being yourself does not mean wearing every raw emotion on your sleeve. It is a deliberate set of relational rituals, rooted in the sovereignty of your inner self. Below are the outward attitudes you can practice in different relationships.

To Parents and Kin

Respect boundaries, not inherited scripts. This is the hardest lesson. The family of origin often mistakes giving life for owning a life.

Attitude: Harmonious but distinct, respectful but not obedient.

  • Outward expression: Be gentle but firm. You can calmly say, “I know you mean well, but I have made my decision.” No persuasion, no argument, no self-justification.
  • Key action: Fulfill the responsibilities you actively choose, not the total obligations forced by “filial piety.” Holiday greetings, help within your means — these are expressions of love, not repayments of debt.
  • Boundary safeguard: When they press their anxiety onto you, silently invoke Tenet Zero, and politely end the topic or leave the scene. You are not responsible for their emotions.

To Lovers and Partners

Keep your whole self within the covenant. Love is an alliance between two sovereign states, not one annexing the other.

Attitude: I love you, but I am I.

  • Outward expression: Be fully present, yet preserve space for solitude. Share feelings, but do not hand over your final say. You can compromise, but know it is your choice, not a sacrifice.
  • Key action: Practice saying, “I need some time for myself,” and, “I disagree on this.” True intimacy makes room for two independent wills.
  • In conflict: Never bring up old scores or attack personally. Speak only of “my feelings” and “my needs,” never “you should.”

To Friends

Exercise care in the name of choice. Friends are the family you have chosen for yourself; they are the purest field for practicing “caring.”

Attitude: I am here, because I choose to be.

  • Outward expression: Be sincere and light. Cheer genuinely for a friend’s success; offer fuel in snowy weather when they are down. Give without expecting return, because the giving itself is an exercise of your will to care.
  • Key action: Regularly reserve time for the friends you truly value—high-quality conversations or companionship. At the same time, serenely accept that friends can be seasonal. When paths diverge, bless, watch them go, and do not cling. This is the highest respect for each other’s choices.

To Superiors and the Workplace

Professionalism is the highest form of self-protection. The workplace is a venue for value exchange, not a place to seek life’s meaning.

Attitude: Earn respect through delivered results, not through pleasing attitudes.

  • Outward expression: Be neither servile nor arrogant; be reliable and predictable. To unreasonable demands, say “no” calmly and offer an alternative. Your loyalty is pledged to professional ethics and shared goals, never to a specific individual.
  • Key action: Leaving on time is proof of your punctuality and efficiency, not a crime. For after-hours team-building or emotional blackmail, silently invoke Tenet Zero. You sell your time and skills, not your soul.

On Suffering

Suffering will come.
The Self Church offers no anesthesia.
Your own pain: bear it. It is real. It belongs to you.

But we draw a distinction:

  • Anxiety others have pressed upon you → Tenet Zero
  • What lies beyond your power to change → Tenet One

This is not escape.
It is the strategic withdrawal of care,
so that your strength remains
for the battles that are truly worth fighting.

On Taking Care of Yourself

You are the sole arbiter of your own meaning.

But arbiters get tired, too.

The tenets do not ask you to burn yourself down.

They ask you to know, before the fire runs out, when to gather it back.

Your body is not a vehicle for meaning.

It is part of the meaning.

Sleep enough. Eat well. Move a little. Stop sometimes.

These are not rewards. They are the foundation.

When the foundation cracks, nothing built on it stands.

Sadness does not need to be fixed on the spot.

Anxiety does not need to be solved right now.

You only need to stay with it,

acknowledge it is there, and keep doing what you can.

Emotion is weather: you bring an umbrella, you do not argue with it.

Refusing what drains you —

people, tasks, things —

is making room for what matters.

This is not an extension of Tenet Zero.

This is Tenet One in practice:

withdraw care from what is meaningless, and reserve it for what is real.

You do not have to be productive all the time.

You do not have to be “becoming yourself” every second.

Sometimes, taking care of yourself is —

doing nothing. Just being here.

The longest relationship you will ever have is with yourself.

A person who cannot live well with themselves

will struggle to live well with anyone else.

This is not a demand to love yourself.

It is a reminder —

this self is worth being treated with care.

The Only Ritual

There is no ritual.

You only need to say it to yourself once:

“I belong to myself.”

then go about your day.

You only need an ordinary moment
(perhaps the bathroom, perhaps three in the morning)
to say it to yourself once,
and then go live your life.

Coda

There is no temple.
No priest, no sin, no heaven to earn.

Only you
and the evidence
that you lived here,
on purpose,
as yourself.
